Copyright & Licensing

Copyright

The African Journal of Health and Medical Sciences (AFJHMS) adheres to an open-access model, meaning that all published articles are freely available to the public without charge. Upon acceptance of an article, the authors retain the copyright of their work but grant AFJHMS the right to publish and distribute the article. The journal applies a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license to all published content, allowing for the broadest dissemination and use of the research while ensuring proper credit to the authors.

Licensing and Author Rights

All articles published in AFJHMS are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0) license. This license permits others to copy, distribute, display, and perform the work and derivative works based upon it, but for non-commercial purposes only, provided appropriate credit is given to the original authors and the source, a link to the license is provided, and any changes made are indicated.

Key Features of the CC BY-NC 4.0 License:

Attribution: Users must give appropriate credit to the original authors, provide a link to the CC BY-NC 4.0 license, and indicate if changes were made. Attribution must not suggest that the authors or AFJHMS endorse the use or the user.

Non-Commercial Use: The work may not be used for commercial purposes. This ensures that the articles are freely accessible for educational, research, and other non-commercial uses.

Author Rights

Authors publishing with AFJHMS retain the following rights:

Right to Share: Authors may freely share their published articles (e.g., via institutional repositories, personal websites, or social media) and broadly disseminate their work for non-commercial purposes.

Right to Reuse: Authors may reuse their work in future publications, such as books, dissertations, or educational materials, without requesting further permission, provided that proper citation of the original work published in AFJHMS is maintained and the reuse is non-commercial.

Third-Party Content

If an article contains third-party material, authors are responsible for securing the necessary permissions for use and distribution under the terms of the CC BY-NC 4.0 license. Evidence of permission must be provided upon submission to AFJHMS.

Compliance with Open Access Requirements

AFJHMS’s licensing policy complies with the open-access requirements of various funding agencies and institutions, ensuring that authors can meet the mandates for open-access publication without additional restrictions or barriers.
